Check out today's front-page story in the biz section of The New York Times on the Communications Workers of America's success at organizing Cingular Wireless. The main reason for the success is obvious: Cingular has agreed to be neutral in organizing drives. Indeed, that's even more obvious when you consider that of the 225,000 workers in the wireless industry--according to the Times--just 39,000 are union, virtually all of them at Cingular.
Here are the grafs we should all keep in mind to spread far and wide:
Cingular's wireless competitors have fought, at times fiercely, against unionization, arguing that an organized labor force would hobble their ability to move workers, cut costs and make changes necessary to compete in a high-tech industry. They often assert that unions ultimately hurt the workers they claim to protect.
But the growth of Cingular into the nation's largest wireless carrier — with a nearly fully unionized labor force — has challenged those assumptions and given a new spark to organized labor, said Harry C. Katz, dean of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University.
"The fact Cingular does well even in the face of unionization helps rebut the argument that unions aren't viable in a technologically sophisticated and dynamic industry," Mr. Katz said.
The rest of the story is here.
So, if you're not a Cingular customer yet (yours truly is), switch today and tell the company you are leaving you're doing so because Cingular is union--and tell Cingular why you're signing up.
You all would be surprised at how many VZ CWA represented workers carry a Cingular phone for their personal use. Vz has maintained that VZW is a seperate company and therefor it cannot negotiate on its behalf or influence its labor relations. Yeah right!
So we go Cingular to support the company of our new brothers and sisters.

I've heard stories about how Verizon has been telling their employees to get Verizon wireless phones'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">wireless phones since they are sister companies. They get very angry when they hear of Verizon workers getting Cingular phones and the workers use the same argument Verizon uses about "labor relations" with Verizon wireless.

Here is my expierence with Cingular
Dear Cingular Wireless Corporate Offices:
I am writing to you today to explain my experience with Cingular Wireless service and Customer Service operation. I started my service with Cingular on September 21, 2006. I purchased my phones from a Cingular store in the Fox Valley Mall; which is located in Aurora, IL.
I switched to Cingular because of the discount I would receive with my current company and that you have the Star Wars exclusive ring tones. I used the Cingular service and paid my first bill in the amount of $286.19 on October 26, 2006. I received a call from Anita, the manager of the store where I purchased my phones. She stated that I would need to pay a deposit of $750.00 per phone line otherwise I would be turned into collections and my service would be cancelled.
This was the first new about a deposit I had heard from Cingular. I was offered to return the equipment and I would be refunded the $251.00 for the phones and the $286.19 for the first bill would be credited as well.
When I returned the phones I was told by a Cingular Wireless Customer Service representative that I would receive the credit for the entire first bill. This person’s name was Megan. Megan explained this over the phone to me.
I called back three days later to determine when the payment was going to be sent. I was told by Holly that the Payment of $286.19 would be mailed within 15 days.
I have called several times since then and was always told I was going to receive the $286.19 back. I spoke with a Customer Service Manager named Jason today who informed I would not receive the money back.
I understand I have no course of action to get that money retuned. However, I would have been fine with that if from day one they would have explained that to me. I also would have preferred being told back in September that I needed a deposit. I could have made an informed decision at that time to look for another cell pone provider.
I will tell you that you have lost a customer for good. I would not ever consider switching to Cingular now or ever. I will also tell everyone I know about this experience that I have had with Cingular in hopes that they will be given a chance to make an informed decision. I am also considering looking into taking out full page ads in every local newspaper to talk about my experience with Cingular Wireless.
I thank you for taking the time to read this letter.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey

Searched for the information on this theme, and only here I found it. So, if you're not a Cingular customer yet (yours truly is), switch today and tell the company you are leaving you're doing so because Cingular is union--and tell Cingular why you're signing up.
