Earth to Melissa: It's Like NAFTA

Melissa Bean is feeling fairly anxious, from what I hear. Apparently, she is begging unions to support her, knowing that without labor's strong support she will probably lose re-election in the 8th District in Illinois. But, because of her vote for the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), she's gotten the cold shoulder.

A well-informed union political operative tells me that Melissa is now claiming that her vote for CAFTA did not violate her promise to unions that she would vote against NAFTA-like agreements. Melissa, with all due respect, that is pretty lame. CAFTA is so bad that only 15 House Democrats voted for it and the deal ignited widespread protests in Central America; in Costa Rica, key politicians are promising to block CAFTA.

I'd have more respect for her if she said she felt enticed by the support she could get from corporate interests if she sold out the labor movement--at least that would be intellectually, if not morally, honest.

But, here's a test. Melissa, how will you vote on the pending Peru Free Trade Agreement, which the White House says it will bring before the Congress this year for a vote? As the Citizens Trade Campaign points out, the deal "is yet another example of the harmful model of trade agreements this administration has promoted. In some respects it is even worse than CAFTA."

As an aside, I've also been told that the Democratic House political machine, lead by Rahm Emanuel (who was Bill Clinton's chief political operative responsible for ramming through NAFTA...can someone mount a primary challenge to this odious politician?), is starting to play the loyalty card with some unions with the message: if Bean is defeated, her loss could end up being the difference between the Democrats taking over the House or not. So, suck it up and support her for the greater good.

To which I respond: where does one draw the line on accountability? At what point can a "Democrat" vote for virtually anything--an illegal war, the bankruptcy bill or CAFTA--and face no political price? And if the pursuit of power--in this case, control of the House--means that there are no principles that a Democratic Party member adheres to, what exactly does the Democratic Party stand for?

Vote Bean out. It's better to lose the seat and not be represented by a Democrat than to support her and be represented by a Benedict Arnold Democrat for the next decade.

Bean's CAFTA vote should spell the end of her political career, at least in the Democratic Party. Even some enlightened Republicans voted against CAFTA. If Bean is nothing but a Corporate shill, what difference does it make if she's a Democrat? She's representing Corporate America, not workers, regardless of her party affiliation.

What difference does it make if you keep a Democratic seat and the holder of the seat consistenly sells out labor's interests? We do better with a cadre of politicos we know will hold the line rather than increase numbers and most of them sell out when it's convenient.

We all need to hold corporate owned Dems accountable. Netroots is behind the unions. Lets get Lieberman, too. We need to send a message loud and clear. Dems either support the middle class or take a hike.!!!

I wish she had not voted for the free trade agreement but I understand her district is very conservative.

Although she won't get all of the labor support, I konw she will get alot. This is just a year where there is not a stomach for shooting ourselves in the foot.

She is running against a total right winger and it is a bad year to run against a popular democrat in a moderate district.

Groucho and Chico could not have said it better.

If the Right-Winger gets in, considering the way things are going now, he'll probably get voted out in 2008. If Bean gets re-elected, you may never, get rid of her.

Again, even some Republicans voted against CAFTA, and some Republicans seem more concerned about workers than Bean. The passage of CAFTA is just about the worst thing for workers that's happened since Bush stole his second election. Do you really want to support an alleged Democrat who's support was critical for passing the CAFTA fiasco? If we expect Democrats to pay attention to the interests of workers, we need to penalize them when they don't pay attention. Supporting Bean will just further assure Corporatist Democrats that they can continue to cater to Corporate interests, instead of American workers.

It doesn't matter how bad her opponent is. Bean is a traitor to her constituents, and should pay the price. Two years of a bad representative is better than 10-20 years of Bean.
