Pelosi To Get Earful From Labor

[PUBLISHING NOTE: IT'S REALLY WEDNESDAY! Your weary correspondent will be up at 4:30 a.m. here in the nation's capitol to catch a flight to the West Coast so...this will have to do for your Wednesday feeding until perhaps later in the day]

I hear that House minority leader Nancy Pelosi and Rahm Emanuel, ex-Clintonista and advocate of so-called free trade (and, as an aside, head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee), will be meeting with labor's political directors this Friday. And I hear that Firefighters prez Harold Schaitberger is making a special trip back from the West Coast to take part in the meeting--and he's coming loaded for bear.

As I hear it, Schaitberger wants to unload on the Dems over the failure of the party to hold the CAFTA 15 accountable. Pelosi had promised to punish those 15 who went over to the dark side--but, as far as anyone can tell, nothing has happened to the miscreants.

I would hope that the issue of the Democrats who are shilling for and/or voting to protect Wal-Mart will come up. I'm still hoping that labor takes some steps to force Democratic Party consultants to stop playing both sides of the fence: labor should not be supporting a party that won't hold its troops to some sort of standard.

Part of the problem is that Emanuel is a political whore: he was a key operative in the Clinton White House who had a central role in the push to pass NAFTA. He'll gladly take corporate money and, then, come begging for labor to deploy its troops during elections to get-out-the-vote. Someone has to draw the line--and hopefully Schaitberger can get the ball rolling.

I also hear that some labor money is beginning to flow to an independent candidate, Bill Schuerer, who is going to run against Melissa Bean, one of the CAFTA 15. Let's take her out.

Wow. So labor might be supporting Schuerer as an independent against Bean.

If so, Bean is toast.

On a related note, as for Pelosi, there are rumblings that she may receive a Green Party challenge from Medea Benjamin and it is not out of the realm of possibility that Benjamin might take her out. Remember, Matt Gonzalez got 48.5% for mayor in San Francisco running as a Green against a corporate Dem not much different from Pelosi. Pelosi has alienated progressives in San Francisco more times than most of us would care to remember. It is not only her pro war votes-her selling off the Presidio to private developers is one of the great scandals of recent Bay Area politics.

If a few of the unions decided to break ranks and go with Benjamin, that might very well be enough to put Benjamin over the top.

At minimum, perhaps Mr. Schaitberger might want to alude to this possibility in his discussion with NP. I'll be that would get her attention.

Without this kind of leverage, I wouldn't hold out high hopes for success-whatever weapons Schaitberger is packing haven't been very effective so far.

labor go with Medea? on what planet? aside from the politics -- and nationally, labor isn't breaking with the Dems in 2006, which is what opposing Pelosi would mean -- have you ever MET her? In her mind, she's always the most important person in the room, and I don't think many labor folks take too kindly to that. after all, that's their point of view about themselves.

Jonathan,

Thanks for mentioning our Congressional campaign against one of the CAFTA 15 / Bush Democrats here in Illinois.

Please note for future reference that we now have a campaign website: www.WinWithBill.com

Yours,

Bill Scheurer

Bill Scheurer is such a joke. What I dont get about you folks is your so angry about CAFTA. Why not look at the big picture? Bean has fought for labor on pensions/postal reform and the biggest of the big; Walmart. Why dont you all check out her voting record before you self promote your agenda to hand the seat back to a republican. Also, can somebody tell me why public citizen (Nader's group) is targeting Bean so viciously when she has an 84% record with them? I cant believe how shortsighted all of this targeting of Bean is. What about Cueller, what about Meeks? These guys dont have to represent ANY republicans in their districts and they get off scott-free. If you want to know my opinion? its because she is a Woman and because she's in a vulnerable district. Way to get a point across, target the only dem challenger to win in the whole country in 04 in a district that voted for bush 56%. Bean has been a breath of fresh air for the 8th district and the democratic party and most importantly, she's been with labor a majority of the time!

All I'm asking is that you check your facts---Look at her Walmart vote if you're going to preach about it!

Word is that the SEIU is a big backer of Bean's opponent, so a little history for those with short memories may be in order.

When Chicago Mayor Rich Daley annointed Rahm Emanuel to run for a vacant House seat, the Stern machine jumped on the bandwagon although there was a creditable alternative in the Democratic primary. Perhaps it was based on that experience that Rahm, a close advisor to Melissa Bean, thought a pro-CAFTA vote wouldn't matter to the labor movement. Perhaps if Stern and company had taken a principled stand in 2002, we wouldn't be in the position we're in today.
We'll never know, but we do know that opportunism whether practised by labor leaders or Democratic Party elected officials has its price.

Hey, it's not just about organized labor.

MBean's votes for bankrupcy "reform" and repealing the dead millionaire's tax were mortal assaults on working people.

She won't lift a finger against the Iraq disaster. Moreover, we've seen no efforts from her towards her cherished "employer relief act" aka: nat'l health insurance.

Both parties, all too often with organized labor's support, have sponsored the flood of indentured illegals--further corroding living wages here.

We're drowning in CYA politicians; and I doubt that Bush is anywhere near 56% in this district today.

Giving Bill Scheurer a serious look.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi would bring to the office a level of left-wing liberalism that will be unprecedented. In the National Journal's 2005 ideological ratings, which were based on scores of votes, Mrs. Pelosi was ranked more liberal than 91 percent of her House colleagues on economic issues, 96 percent on social matters and 82 percent on foreign-policy issues. Here are her relative rankings (economic, social, foreign) for 2004 (93, 88, 81), 2003 (92, 89, 70), 2002 (88, 84, 90) and 2001 (94, 83, 93).

Vote no on Nancy Pelosi!
